LipiFlow® Treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)

LipiFlow is an advanced, FDA-cleared in-office procedure designed to treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, the most common cause of dry eye disease. MGD occurs when the Meibomian glands become obstructed or fail to secrete high-quality oil. This leads to increased tear evaporation, ocular irritation, burning, redness, and intermittent blurred vision.

LipiFlow is clinically proven to improve Meibomian gland function by applying targeted heat and gentle pulsation to the eyelids, helping restore the natural lipid layer of the tear film.

How LipiFlow Works

The LipiFlow system is engineered to deliver precise thermal energy to the inner eyelid surface while simultaneously providing controlled pulsation to the outer eyelid. This combination is designed to liquefy and evacuate obstructed oils within the Meibomian glands. Throughout the procedure, the eye itself remains protected by a specially designed applicator that avoids direct corneal contact.

By restoring gland patency and improving oil secretion, LipiFlow helps promote a more stable tear film, reduce tear evaporation, and alleviate symptoms associated with MGD.

Clinical Benefits of LipiFlow

LipiFlow has been shown in clinical studies to increase Meibomian gland output and enhance tear film quality. Many patients experience improved comfort, reduced dryness, and more consistent visual clarity in the weeks following treatment. Because LipiFlow addresses the underlying gland obstruction rather than only the symptoms, it is considered a highly effective option for long-term management of evaporative dry eye disease.

Is LipiFlow Appropriate for You?

Patients who experience chronic dryness, burning, irritation, watery eyes, or fluctuating vision may have Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. A comprehensive dry eye evaluation—including gland imaging and tear film assessment—is required to determine whether LipiFlow is clinically appropriate.
