Types of Eye Surgeries
Laser eye surgeries showcase the progress made in vision correction. Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), approved by the FDA in 1995, was the first successful surgery to reshape the cornea by removing tissue. Patients often notice vision improvements within a few days after PRK.
LASIK followed PRK, involving the creation of a thin flap on the eye’s surface to reshape the cornea underneath. Vision clarity can return within hours post-surgery. While some experience side effects like dry eyes or halos during healing, LASIK can be performed using mechanical tools, lasers, or wavefront technology that customizes treatment based on how light interacts with your eye.
Not just nearsighted individuals benefit from surgery. Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) uses low-heat radio waves via a tiny probe to create spots around the cornea’s edge, steepening it and improving near vision – a boon for farsighted patients.
Some surgeries involve implanting artificial lenses. Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) act like permanent contact lenses placed over your natural lens to correct severe nearsightedness. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) replaces your natural lens with an artificial one shaped to correct extreme farsightedness.
Eye Surgery Considerations
Our eyes change as we age, so not all surgeries suit everyone. People under 18 usually aren’t candidates for laser surgeries because their eyes are still developing.
